Super Princess Peach - for NDS

Super Princess Peach puts the Mushroom Kingdom's princess at the front of her own platformer. Released for the Nintendo DS in 2005, developed by TOSE and published by Nintendo, it opens with a reversal of the usual story: Bowser is up to no good again, and this time Mario, Luigi and the castle Toads are the ones carried off. Peach sets out after them with nothing but a magical umbrella for company. Super Princess Peach is remembered as the rare platform game that hands the lead role to Peach and builds a whole set of mechanics around her.

Those mechanics are her vibes, emotions channelled through the touch screen into powers. Happiness lets Peach float on a rising breeze, anger sets her ablaze so she can burn through walls, sorrow brings tears that make vegetation grow, and calm restores her strength. The umbrella handles the rest, swatting enemies, catching them and carrying them around. Peach runs, jumps, floats and fights across eight worlds, from Fury Volcano to Spooky Shriek Mansion, and almost every area hides something: touch screen minigames, puzzles that need the right vibe at the right moment, and power ups that improve both Peach and her umbrella.

Super Princess Peach still has a following because it is generous and good natured without being shallow. The early stages are gentle enough for a young player, while the hidden Toads and collectibles give completionists plenty to chase, and the vibe system keeps the levels from feeling like familiar ground in new paint. Its art and music are warm in a way that suits the character. For a collection, Super Princess Peach is an easy pick: a Nintendo published platformer on the DS, an unusual entry in the Mario family, and one of the few times Peach has carried a game of her own.
