Super R.B.I. Baseball - for SNES

Super R.B.I. Baseball brought the R.B.I. Baseball name to the Super Nintendo late in the system's life, developed by Gray Matter and published by Time Warner Interactive in 1995. It carries nearly 700 real major league players from all 28 big league rosters, and it sends you to the parks you know, from the friendly confines in Chicago to the big green wall in Boston. For a series that made its reputation on quick, readable baseball, Super R.B.I. Baseball arrives with more to do than fans of the earlier games would expect.

At the plate you can step in as Juan Gonzalez, Frank Thomas or Cecil Fielder, and on the mound you will have to deal with arms like Duane Ward, Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens lighting up the radar around 90 miles per hour. Beyond straight games, Super R.B.I. Baseball lets you build your own Dream Team by moving real players between clubs, replay classic baseball moments through the Game Breakers module, which includes rosters of every division champion since 1989, and warm up your glove in Defense Practice mode. Two players can settle things between themselves, or you can take on the computer alone.

The appeal of Super R.B.I. Baseball is the balance it strikes: it plays fast, the way the R.B.I. games always did, while keeping enough around it to hold your attention across a season. Those 1995 rosters also make the cartridge a small time capsule of that baseball era, which is half the pleasure of coming back to it. Because it arrived so late in the Super Nintendo's run, Super R.B.I. Baseball never got the attention the big sports series enjoyed, so it makes a satisfying find for baseball fans and for collectors filling out the console's final years.
