Super Slap Shot - for SNES

Super Slap Shot is a hockey game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Ringler Studios and published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment in 1993. It landed in the middle of the console's long run of sports releases and stood out by leaning into the rough side of the game rather than smoothing it over. Super Slap Shot offers 32 fast and furious teams from Montreal to L.A., a crowd that reacts to every turn of the play with booing, cheering and clapping, and a referee who calls only the penalties he actually sees.

The action is built on stick work and momentum. You slash in for the puck, speed down the rink, and square off with an opponent racing at you with a high stick of his own. Check him hard and the steal is yours. Push it further and the fists fly while the crowd goes insane. Slashing, holding and tripping all carry penalty time, so a spell in the box is part of the rhythm of a match. Get clear and it comes down to you and the goalie, with a 90 MPH slap shot waiting to settle it. Between periods you can flip through 14 pages of hot stats, and two players can take the ice head to head.

Super Slap Shot keeps its following because it reads the sport the way fans of the era did: quick skating, heavy contact and a goal that feels earned. The two player mode is where it still shines, since trading checks and penalties with someone sitting next to you turns every period into an argument worth having. For collectors it is a good example of the 16 bit sports library beyond the biggest names, and a Super Nintendo hockey cartridge that is easy to put in front of a friend who has never played it before.
