Super Smash T.V. - for Genesis

Super Smash T.V. brought the arcade favorite Smash TV home to the Sega Genesis in 1992, converted by Probe Software and published by Flying Edge. The premise is a television game show set in a deeply unfriendly future: you are the contestant, the studio is a run of sealed arenas, and the prizes, cars, toasters and cash, lie scattered across floors crowded with things that want you dead. Super Smash T.V. is loud, fast and gleefully over the top, and it carries the arcade game's reputation with it onto the Genesis.

Play is pure arena shooting. Each room locks shut, enemies pour in from every side, and you clear the floor before the doors open onto the next one. You face mutant cyborgs, club wielding mechanoids, tactical assault tanks and bosses on another scale entirely, including the metal munching twin cobras and thirty tons of angry Mutoid Man. Power ups turn your fire into spread shots, rockets and grenades, and hanging onto one for a few rooms changes the character of a whole run. Super Smash T.V. supports two players at once, which is how it was meant to be played: twice the firepower, twice the chaos and a score to argue over afterwards.

Super Smash T.V. survives because its loop is close to perfect: one room, one wave, one more try. It is the kind of game you pick up for ten minutes and are still holding an hour later, and the two player mode makes it an easy thing to put in front of guests who claim they do not play games. For collectors, it is one of the stronger home versions of a landmark arcade shooter and a fine reminder of how strange and funny early nineties design could be. Big guns, big prizes, and a slot on the shelf well earned.
