Super Soccer Champ - for SNES

Super Soccer Champ is a soccer game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Taito in 1992. It came early in the console's life, when sports games were still working out how much control to hand the player, and Taito's answer was to hand over nearly everything. In Super Soccer Champ you manage the team and plot strategy, then step into the boots of whichever player is in the thick of the action, including Ace.

You take charge of one of eight world class teams and work through a series of matches on the way to the top. Control passes to the active player on your side in both attack and defence, so the same match asks you to build play and then break it up. The attacking repertoire covers volleys, passes, goal shots, overhead kicks and plenty of other tricks. On defence your players can punch, pull, shoulder charge and slide tackle, and you can simply choose to foul, which was a rare thing for a soccer video game to offer. A referee is watching for it, though he has to spot the offence first. Two players can share the pitch.

Players keep a soft spot for Super Soccer Champ because of its pace and its sense of humour about the sport. Knowing you can shoulder charge a striker off the ball and get away with it when the referee is looking elsewhere gives matches a mischief that tidier soccer games lack. For collectors it is an interesting piece of Taito's Super Nintendo output and an early entry on the console's sports shelf, worth a place beside the better known soccer cartridges for how differently it approaches the same game.
