Super Spy Hunter - for NES

Super Spy Hunter is a vertically scrolling action game developed by Tokai Engineering and published by Sunsoft for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. It carries the Spy Hunter idea much further than before: your spy car is a heavily armed machine that converts into a boat or a plane at opportune moments. Super Spy Hunter is widely regarded as one of the technical high points of Sunsoft's work on the console, and its standing among players has only grown with time.

The action scrolls fast and vertically while a well funded terrorist enemy throws everything it has at you: cars, trucks, helicopters and worse. Powerups are scattered along the route, both defensive and offensive, and feeding them into your vehicle is how you keep pace with the escalating opposition. The bosses are built on a scale the console rarely attempted, and the handling keeps you weaving between traffic and incoming fire rather than simply holding a lane. Super Spy Hunter is a single player game, pitched at people who enjoy learning a route and mastering it.

Super Spy Hunter has become a favorite among players who dig past the famous names in the Nintendo Entertainment System library. The sense of speed, the Sunsoft soundtrack and the sheer confidence of the presentation all hold up, and the difficulty is the fair kind that rewards practice. It arrived late in the console's life, which is part of why it plays so smoothly and part of why collectors keep an eye out for it. If your shelf is heavy on shooters and light on surprises, Super Spy Hunter belongs there.
