Super Thunder Blade - for Genesis

Super Thunder Blade was one of the games that introduced players to the Sega Genesis, a 1988 helicopter shooter developed by Sega Enterprises and published in North America by Sega of America. It carries all the spectacle of Sega's arcade work from that period: a gunship rushing low over cities, canyons and enemy fortresses, with the hardware throwing sprites at you faster than seemed reasonable at the time. The craft once known simply as Thunder Blade is back in action, and as part of the Air Force Special Operation Troop you take control of its state of the art artillery against renegade guerilla armies with plans to dominate the world.

You fly alone, cannon and missiles under your thumbs, and the game changes its point of view as you go. Much of the action sits behind the helicopter as the ground rushes away beneath you and buildings, bridges and tanks close in from the horizon. Elsewhere the camera lifts to look straight down, and the feel of the thing shifts with it. There is no gentle opening stretch in Super Thunder Blade. It is short, loud and steep, and learning it means learning where the pressure comes from before it arrives.

Part of the affection for Super Thunder Blade is historical. This is what a new Genesis owner showed off in 1988, proof that the machine could move more on screen than anything else in the house. The rest is the simple pleasure of it: a fast arcade run you can finish in one sitting and then immediately try to do better. For collectors, Super Thunder Blade belongs on the shelf as a launch era piece and as a record of Sega at its most confident, selling speed and scale above all else. It makes a fine first stop for anyone exploring where the Genesis library began.
