Superman - for Genesis

Superman arrived on the Sega Genesis in 1992, developed by Thinking Rabbit and published by Sunsoft, a single player action platformer that puts the Man of Steel to work defending Metropolis. What makes Superman stand out is how willing it is to change shape. One moment you are moving through a city stage on foot, trading punches with a familiar villain, and the next you are airborne with the whole screen given over to flight. Sunsoft had a strong name for action games in these years, and that confidence shows in how directly this one commits to the fantasy of being Superman rather than simply putting the costume on a platform hero.

As Superman you jump, punch and kick your way through several levels, facing the likes of Prankster, Metallo and Mr. Mxyzptlk. After the opening stretch, Brainiac kidnaps Lois Lane and takes her to his space station, which sends the game off the ground. Flight levels let you fly freely and fire lasers from Superman's eyes. Back on foot, icons scattered through the stages grant a single use of a super power, often a super punch or a spin attack that clears an obstacle in your way, so part of the challenge is deciding when to spend what you are carrying instead of holding it too long.

Players still enjoy Superman for its straightforwardness. It is a 1992 Genesis action game that knows exactly which fantasy it is selling, and the shift from street level brawling to open flight still lands. The villain lineup is a pleasure for anyone who grew up with the comics or the cartoons, and the pace suits a short evening run. For collectors, Superman is a notable piece of licensed Genesis history and one of Sunsoft's entries in the superhero corner of the library. If you keep a shelf of comic book games, Superman has a clear place on it.
