Syd of Valis - for Genesis

Syd of Valis is a 1992 action platformer for the Sega Genesis, developed by I.S.C. and published by Shin Nihon Laser Soft. It takes the Valis series, known for its dramatic story scenes and its sword wielding heroine, and redraws the whole cast in small, round, cartoon proportions. That gives Syd of Valis a lighter look than the rest of the family while keeping the stakes of the story entirely serious, and it is the reason the game stands out at a glance on a shelf of Genesis platformers.

Yuko Ahso looks like an ordinary grammar school student, but she is actually the Valis Warrior. She defeated King Rogles of the Dark World with the Valis sword given to her by Queen Valia, and lost her friend Reiko in the process. Now a familiar voice calls her back: Emperor Megas has threatened the Dream World and their friend Vecanti, and a burning desire has moved Yuko to action. Play is single player and built on jumping, climbing and close range sword work, with story scenes carrying you between the stages, so Syd of Valis settles into a steady rhythm of platforming, a boss, and then another piece of the tale.

Players keep a soft spot for Syd of Valis because of that contrast: a world ending threat told by characters who look like toys, carried through with real sincerity. It is also an approachable way into the Valis story for anyone curious about the series, since it sits complete on one Genesis cartridge. For collectors, Syd of Valis is a distinctive 1992 entry in the Genesis action library and a name that regulars recognise immediately. It is the sort of cartridge that starts a conversation the moment someone spots it on your shelf.
