Tenshi no Uta: Shiroki Tsubasa no Inori, which translates as The Prayer of the White Wings, is a role playing game developed and published by Telenet Japan in 1994 for the Super Famicom. It was released only in Japan, and this cartridge plays an English fan translation. The game is the third entry in the Tenshi no Uta series and begins a new story set in the same universe as the two games before it, which appeared on a different console: recurring characters return and earlier events are referred to, but newcomers can start here. For fans of the era's Japanese role playing games, Tenshi no Uta is a well crafted example that most players outside Japan never had the chance to see.

It plays as a traditional Japanese style role playing game: top down navigation of towns and dungeons, random encounters, and turn based battles viewed from a first person perspective. The story moves in a linear line and characters level up automatically, keeping the focus on exploration and the unfolding plot. The stand out feature is the ability to talk with the monsters you meet in battle by learning monster languages. With the right words you can persuade a monster not to fight at all, and you can trade with them and acquire rare items you would never find otherwise, which turns many encounters into something other than a fight.

Tenshi no Uta: Shiroki Tsubasa no Inori is loved for that conversational twist on combat and for its warm, classical approach to the genre. Telenet Japan has a devoted following, and this is one of their most approachable works, now readable for English speaking players. On a Super Nintendo cartridge it is a chance to play through a complete sixteen bit adventure that stayed out of reach for decades. Collectors who care about Japanese role playing games, or who enjoy filling the gaps that never crossed over, will find Tenshi no Uta a genuinely worthwhile part of the shelf.
