Terranigma - for SNES

Terranigma is an action role playing game developed by Quintet and published by Enix for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995. It is widely regarded as the closing chapter of a trilogy with Quintet's earlier Soul Blazer from 1992 and Illusion of Gaia from 1993, a trio joined by theme rather than by name. In the distant past a struggle between light and dark scoured the surface of the planet of all life. Now Ark, a mischievous boy from the lone village of Crysta in the world inside the planet, triggers a crisis that sends him out on a journey across time.

Terranigma plays from an overhead view with direct, real time combat, where timing and positioning matter more than menus, and Ark's growing set of moves opens the world up as much as any key or tool does. The scale of the quest is what people remember: Terranigma asks you to resurrect continents, bring back plants and animals and then watch towns and civilization grow from what you have restored, so the map itself changes as you work through it. It is a single player game.

Terranigma is held in genuine affection, partly for how its story lands and partly because it never received a North American release, which kept it a word of mouth legend for years among players who knew it only by reputation. The writing is warmer and sadder than most 16 bit action RPGs attempt, and the ending is still discussed. For a collection, Terranigma is a cornerstone: the last of Quintet's Super Nintendo action RPGs and, for many people, one of the finest games on the console.
