The Addams Family - for Genesis

The Addams Family is a platform game for the Sega Genesis, developed by Ocean Software, published by Flying Edge in 1993 and built around the family's own mansion. The fiendish Abigail Craven has brainwashed Uncle Fester and shut Pugsley, Wednesday and Granny away somewhere in the house, which leaves Gomez to go room by room and bring everyone home. What makes The Addams Family stand out is that setting: the mansion is the whole game, a maze of creaky, ghoul filled rooms that you slowly come to know by heart.

This is a single player game, and it plays as an exploring platformer rather than a straight march to the right. Gomez runs and jumps through the wings of the house, fences off the ghouls with his sword, hurls golf balls at anything out of reach and takes to the air with a fez that doubles as a small helicopter. Doors and corridors loop back on one another, so progress comes from mapping the place in your head, working out the route to each trapped relative and remembering which rooms hide something useful. The family members you free are the measure of how far you have come.

The Addams Family holds up because the mood is right. The animation is bouncy, the mansion is full of small jokes, and there is real satisfaction in finally understanding how the building fits together after a dozen wrong turns. It is approachable enough to pick up for twenty minutes and layered enough to keep you charting the house for an evening. For collectors, The Addams Family is a tidy Genesis platformer with a famous name on the label, an Ocean Software credit for anyone who follows the studio, and the kooky, ookie charm that has not faded a bit since 1993.
