The Adventures of Mighty Max - for Genesis

The Adventures of Mighty Max is an action platformer for the Sega Genesis, developed by WJS Design and published by Ocean Software in 1994, based on the Mighty Max toy line and the cartoon that came with it. Max owns a magic cap that opens doors between worlds, which is how he keeps turning up wherever somebody needs rescuing. The demonic Skull Master has locked the portals Max travels by and kept a few of them for himself, storing his destructive weapons behind them, so Mighty Max goes after the lot of them to put a stop to the whole scheme.

Play works through Skull Master's dimensions one at a time, with Max jumping, climbing and fighting his way across each one in search of the weapons hidden there. The levels lean on the platforming the Genesis did well: gaps that need a measured jump, enemies with patterns worth learning, and stages that want a second look before you move on. Max himself is small and quick, which suits how tightly the stages are arranged, and the change of world behind every portal keeps the look of the game shifting as you go. The cartridge supports two players, so a second controller has a use.

The Adventures of Mighty Max has a following partly for its premise and partly because it is a solid, unfussy platformer of the sort the Genesis library is full of, the kind you can finish in a few sittings and come back to without ceremony. Skull Master is a good villain for a game like this, and the dimension hopping gives the designers an excuse to change the scenery often. For collectors, The Adventures of Mighty Max is one of the quieter licensed platformers on the console, an Ocean Software release from the year the brand was everywhere, and a pleasant surprise for anyone who only ever knew the toys.
