The Blue Marlin - for NES

The Blue Marlin is a saltwater fishing game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Hot B in 1992. The studio built its reputation on fishing games, and The Blue Marlin is its take on deep sea sport: warm blue water, the world's famous big game destinations, and one trophy above all the rest, the blue marlin itself. It is presented as a realistic simulation rather than a quick arcade diversion, and it treats the sport as the exhilarating and backbreaking work it is.

Play puts you out on the water after the fish, with the trip itself part of the challenge. You work the rod and reel against something that fights back, matching your strength against the writhing frenzy of a powerful marlin, giving line when it runs and taking it back when you can. The famous destinations give the game its sense of travel, and there is plenty swimming below before the marlin ever shows itself. The Blue Marlin is a single player game, and it asks for patience in a way few NES sports titles do: reading the conditions, choosing your spot and waiting out a long fight rather than mashing your way to a result.

The Blue Marlin keeps a following among people who like the quiet corners of the NES library, where the goal is not a boss but a fish, and among anglers who enjoy seeing the sport taken seriously on a console. For collectors it is a neat example of Hot B's run of fishing games and one of the more unusual sports cartridges on the system. If your shelf runs to the odd and the specific, The Blue Marlin fits right in.
