The Brainies is a puzzle game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Titus France in 1996. The premise is simple and very silly: the Brainies are round fluffy monsters that live only to create chaos and universal disorder, and your only weapon is your brain. You neutralize them by getting each one onto its sleeping pad. The Brainies arrived late in the life of the console, and it belongs to that run of thoughtful sliding puzzle games that ask for planning rather than quick reflexes.
Each stage is a single screen puzzle. Send a Brainie off in a direction and it keeps going until something stops it, so the walls, the scenery and the other Brainies all become tools you can use, and the order you move them in matters as much as the moves themselves. Get it wrong and a Brainie ends up somewhere useless, which usually means starting the screen again with a better plan. It is a game for one player, and the difficulty climbs steadily as new layouts appear. There is no timer breathing down your neck, just the puzzle and your patience.
People come back to The Brainies for the same reason they come back to any good puzzle game: the moment a screen that looked impossible suddenly makes sense. It has charm too, since the Brainies themselves are expressive little creatures and their antics give you something to think about while you work. As a 1996 Super Nintendo release it is not one of the names everybody knows, which makes it a satisfying find for puzzle fans and for anyone building out the quieter end of the library. Start your brain, beat the pain: the Brainies are waiting for you.
