The Flintstones is a platform game for the Sega Genesis, developed by Foley Hi Tech and published by Sega of America in 1996, based on the 1994 live action film. It is a different game from the Taito release that happens to share its name, and it is best known for something unusual: it never had a cartridge release of its own, reaching North American players through the Sega Channel service for only a brief period, which made The Flintstones one of the hardest Genesis games of its day to actually see.
You play as Fred, making your way home from the Quarry and then onward to rescue Pebbles and Bam Bam, Barney and Wilma from the scheming Cliff Vandercave. It is side scrolling platforming with a twist in the combat: jumping on enemies is not how you deal with them. Instead Fred swings a club at anything within reach, rolls a limited supply of bowling balls along the ground and throws rocks at trouble further away. Managing that small arsenal is much of the game, since ammunition runs down and the club asks you to get close, and the cartridge supports two players as well.
The Flintstones has a reputation now for being the Genesis game most of its audience missed, and the pleasant surprise is that it is a decent platformer underneath the story. Bedrock suits the hardware, the weapon juggling gives the stages more thought than a straight run and jump, and Fred is an enjoyable character to steer. For collectors, The Flintstones is one of the odder entries in the Genesis library, a 1996 release from the very end of the console's life, and a colorful, good natured platformer that belongs on the shelf next to the better known cartoon tie ins.
