The Goonies II - for NES

The Goonies II is Konami's second NES outing with the gang from the 1980s adventure film, released in 1987 with the characters, the villains and the music that made the movie such a hit, including the theme song. Konami both developed and published it, and because the first Goonies game appeared on the Famicom rather than on the Nintendo Entertainment System, The Goonies II was the first chance many players had to control a Goonie at all. It stands out for how little it behaves like a straight film tie in: Konami built something larger and stranger than the license required.

You play Mikey, whose friends have been kidnapped by the Fratelli family and hidden in a dark underground hideout, along with Annie the Mermaid. The game moves between side scrolling platform stages and a first person view of rooms, where you search walls and doorways for hidden passages, items and trapped friends. Gear you find along the way lets you break through surfaces, survive cold and water and light your way deeper in, while Ma Fratelli, Cousin Pipsqueak and her two sons do their best to stop you. The goal is to free everyone, wreck the master computer and get out alive.

Players still love The Goonies II because it rewards curiosity. The hideout is a puzzle box, and the pleasure of the game lies in mapping it yourself, remembering which wall gave way and which door led somewhere new. Konami's soundtrack is one of the most hummable on the console, and the mix of searching and platforming still feels unusual today. As a cartridge it is a fine example of a studio at the top of its craft taking a movie license seriously, and any NES collection built around Konami's run on the system, or around 1980s film tie ins, has a space shaped exactly like The Goonies II.
