The Guardian Legend - for NES

The Guardian Legend is Compile's science fiction shooter for the Nintendo Entertainment System, published by Brøderbund Software in 1988. You play the guardian of Earth, a highly sophisticated aerobot transformer who can switch between a fighter craft and a humanoid fighting form, sent to infiltrate Naju, a huge planet like object the aliens have aimed at our world. What makes The Guardian Legend special is that it refuses to be only one kind of game: Compile folded a vertical shooter and an overhead action adventure into a single cartridge and made both halves count.

Inside Naju you explore a branching world from an overhead view, fighting through five hostile alien tribes that are competing for control of the territory, and your task is to activate ten safety devices that arm the object's destruction sequence before it reaches Earth. Each area leads into a corridor stage where you take flight and the game becomes a scrolling shooter with heavy bosses waiting at the end. Weapons are collected as chips and drawn from a shared energy supply, so you choose what to equip and when to spend. A password keeps your progress, and the balance of exploring, upgrading and shooting is what keeps players returning to The Guardian Legend.

The reputation of The Guardian Legend among NES players has only grown. It is often named among the best shooters on the console, and it still feels generous, fast and surprisingly deep. Compile's touch with bullet patterns and boss fights is all over it, the soundtrack is a favorite, and the two sided structure means neither style of play gets the chance to go stale. For collectors it is one of those NES cartridges worth owning on its own merits rather than as a curiosity, a game that rewards a long evening and holds up against anything in the genre.
