The Incredible Hulk - for Genesis

The Incredible Hulk is an action platform game developed by Probe Software and published by U.S. Gold for the Sega Genesis in 1994. It sets the gamma powered green giant against the Leader, whose robot warriors and mutants stand between Bruce Banner and any chance of quiet. Where plenty of comic adaptations of the era felt weightless, The Incredible Hulk commits to impact: punches land with a thud, enemies crumple, and the Rhino arrives by charging through a brick wall rather than waiting politely at the end of a corridor.

Play is built around raw strength. The Hulk walks, leaps and tears through side scrolling stages, throwing heavy punches and uppercuts, breaking what gets in his way and trading blows with the Leader's forces and with familiar faces from the comics. Progress rewards patience as much as reflexes: reading enemy patterns matters more than rushing, and the boss fights ask you to recognise an attack before you answer it. This is a single player cartridge from start to finish, with nothing to manage and nothing to distract from the business of smashing.

Players still like The Incredible Hulk for how unapologetic it is. There is no gimmick and no inventory: there is a wall, and you are the Hulk. The art does right by the character, the sound effects are satisfyingly blunt, and the challenge is the honest kind that teaches you something each time you lose. For collectors it is a solid piece of the Genesis comic book shelf and a reminder that U.S. Gold and Probe Software knew how to make a licence feel heavy in the hands. The Incredible Hulk is worth keeping within reach of the console rather than filed away.
