The Jungle Book is a platform game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment in 1994. You play Mowgli, the boy raised by a pack of wolves, making his way through the jungle while Shere Khan the tiger hunts him, with the safety of the man village waiting at the end. Virgin's team had a reputation for beautiful animation on 16 bit hardware, and The Jungle Book shows it: the sprites move with real character and the jungle is layered, colorful and full of depth.
Movement is the heart of it. Mowgli sneaks, swings and swoops through stages built around incredibly tricky vines, and he fires off bananas at the scorpions, vampire bats and crazy apes that get in his way. There are venom balls to neutralize, monkeys that throw coconuts and a steady supply of climbing puzzles between you and the exit. Stages ask you to gather a set number of gems before they let you leave, which turns each one into a search as much as a race. It is a single player game, and the challenge is firm without ever feeling unfair.
The Jungle Book is still loved for how it looks and sounds. It is one of the better looking platform games of its generation, and it is remembered for a difficulty that insists you learn the vines properly. For collectors it belongs with the other strong licensed platform games of the mid nineties, the ones built by teams who clearly cared about animation, and it is an easy game to show someone who has never seen what the Super Nintendo could do with a cartoon. Eat your potassium: it is a jungle out there, and The Jungle Book is worth the trip.
