The Karate Kid - for NES

The Karate Kid takes the martial arts story from the films and turns it into a short, punchy NES game. Developed by Atlus and published by LJN in 1987, it follows Daniel from the tournament mat into fights on the streets of Los Angeles, the back roads of Okinawa and stranger places beyond, with the lesson the movies keep teaching: fighting well is not only about throwing punches. The Karate Kid was one of the earlier film based cartridges on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and it still carries that late 1980s licensed game charm.

Play is a side scrolling fight. You move forward, you punch, kick and jump, and you face a stream of opponents who each come at you with their own timing. Special techniques are earned and then spent, so the game rewards saving your best move for the moment it matters rather than throwing everything at the first enemy you meet. Between the fighting stages come bonus challenges that test precision instead of aggression, catching a fly with chopsticks and splitting blocks of ice with a bare hand, and the cartridge supports two players. Discipline, reading your enemy and a clear head get you further in The Karate Kid than button mashing ever will.

The Karate Kid is fondly remembered for its opening stage, a compact version of the tournament that ends with the kick everyone knows, and for a soundtrack that stays stuck in your head for days. It is brisk, it is harder than it first looks, and it is one of those cartridges people come back to because they finished it as a child and want to find out whether they still can. For collectors it is an appealing piece of 1980s film licensing history and an easy recommendation for anyone building a shelf of NES tie ins or fighting games.
