The Lawnmower Man - for SNES

The Lawnmower Man is an action game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by The Sales Curve and published by THQ in 1993. It is a tie in with the film and follows the same story: inside a shadowy research agency, the brilliant but maverick Dr. Angelo uses Jobe, a simple lawnmower man, as the subject of a virtual reality experiment and creates the superhuman CyberJobe, who vows to dominate mankind. The race is on to stop him before he reaches the global computer network. The Lawnmower Man blends action stages with 3D sequences, an ambitious thing to attempt in 1993.

The game moves between two kinds of play. In the real world you fight through The Shop's security agents, giant wasps, killer primates and vehicles under CyberJobe's control, in stages built around running, jumping and shooting. In the virtual worlds the view changes and you swoop and dive through hostile tunnels and passages, chasing CyberJobe himself. The two styles alternate so that neither outstays its welcome, and the cartridge supports up to two players. Those 3D sections were the headline feature at the time, and they still give the game a distinct identity among its contemporaries.

The Lawnmower Man is a fascinating piece of its moment, made when virtual reality was the most exciting idea in entertainment and games were racing to show what it might look like. Players enjoy it for the variety and for how confidently it mixes styles, and collectors seek it out as one of the more memorable film adaptations in the Super Nintendo library. If you have any interest in early nineties technology and the films and games that chased it, The Lawnmower Man deserves a spot on the shelf, and it still plays well enough to earn it.
