The Miracle Piano Teaching System - for NES

The Miracle Piano Teaching System is exactly what its name promises: a piano teaching system for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Software Toolbox in 1990 and sold together with a keyboard. In 1990 that was a startling proposition. The family television, a games machine and a course of music lessons were combined into something meant to teach a complete beginner to play, and The Miracle Piano Teaching System remains one of the most ambitious pieces of NES software that was never really a game at all.

The software is built to teach rather than to score. Lessons are laid out to take an absolute beginner from first notes onward, and because the keyboard connects to the console, the system responds to what you actually play instead of simply showing you what to do, which is the part that separates it from a book or a tape. Progress comes step by step, with practice built into the course itself. The Miracle Piano Teaching System is designed around that keyboard, so the keyboard is what brings the lessons to life, and it is a single player experience.

People remember The Miracle Piano Teaching System warmly, very often because it is how they first learned where middle C lives. It belongs to a brief and hopeful moment when home consoles were expected to educate as well as entertain, and it went about the job with more patience than most. For collectors, The Miracle Piano Teaching System is one of the odd and lovable corners of the NES library, a title that always needs explaining to guests and always gets a reaction. On a shelf of platform games and shooters, it tells a different story about what the console was for.
