The Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare opens with a classic excuse: Bart lost his homework, and this time he swears he simply fell asleep. Sculptured Software built it and Acclaim Entertainment published it in 1992 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, at the height of the show's first wave of fame. What makes Bart's Nightmare stand out is how little it behaves like a normal platformer. It is a run of dream sketches, each with rules of its own, strung along a street Bart sleepwalks down in his pyjamas.
That street is the hub: dodge whatever wanders into it, grab the homework pages blowing past, and each page drops you into a nightmare. Eight levels wait in there, each stranger than the last, with Homer Kong, Momthra and Barney Gumble riding a pink elephant among the things standing between Bart and his assignment. Collect a page from every level before you wake up, or the whole assignment is lost. It is a single player game and it does not hold your hand: part shooter, part platformer, thoroughly odd.
Players still love Bart's Nightmare for the very things that frustrated them as children: it is hard, it is weird, and it commits completely to its own logic. The Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare is also one of the most recognisable Simpsons games ever made, which is why it turns up in so many collections of licensed cartridges and 1990s television curiosities. For collectors it is an easy one to love, a loud and funny snapshot of what Simpsons mania looked like when it reached the Super Nintendo.
