The Sporting News Baseball - for SNES

The Sporting News Baseball brings the name of America's most influential sporting journal to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Now Production and published by Hudson Soft in 1995. It carries a Major League Baseball Players Association licence, so the names on the field are the real ones, and it arrived late in the console's life, when SNES sports games had learned a thing or two. The Sporting News Baseball sets out to be a serious baseball game rather than a cartoon version of one, with player attributes modelled closely enough to matter.

You choose your teammates and take on a season, with those detailed attributes shaping what happens at the plate and out in the field. The standout feature is four player simultaneous action, which turns a quiet evening of baseball into something much louder. Ballparks are yours to pick, domed or open to the sky, and there is a dream field to play on as well, a trip back to the days of Shoeless Joe with a cornfield beyond the fence. It is the sort of touch that tells you the makers liked baseball.

Baseball fans keep this one around because it plays straight: the attributes mean something, a season has weight, and four controllers make it a party without losing the sport underneath. The Sporting News Baseball is also a good late era SNES find, from the stretch when the console was being pushed as far as it would go. For collectors of 16 bit sports games, The Sporting News Baseball earns its place on the shelf, and it still works beautifully when three friends turn up.
