The Untouchables - for SNES

The Untouchables is an action game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Ocean Software and released in 1994. Ocean made its name on film adaptations, and The Untouchables is one of the studio's most fondly remembered. The Mob has blown into the Windy City: counterfeiting on the West side, gun running on the wharf, gangland beatings on the streets downtown. Only Eliot Ness and the Untouchables stand between Capone and complete control of Chicago. Ocean had already taken The Untouchables to home computers some years earlier, and this version carries that Prohibition era mood onto the Super Nintendo.

This is a single player game that changes shape from stage to stage rather than repeating the same fight. You work through the city as Ness, moving along streets, warehouses and the waterfront, with platforming and gunplay traded back and forth while Capone's heavies appear from doorways, windows and cover. Shots and health both matter, so the game rewards players who study a screen for a moment, work out where the fire will come from, then advance, instead of charging in. The period setting carries through the whole of The Untouchables, in the backdrops, the weapons and the music.

Prohibition era Chicago is rare ground for a console action game, and that is a large part of why The Untouchables is still played. It commits to the hats, the cars, the tommy guns and the sense of a city being fought over block by block. Players who grew up with Ocean's film games remember its mixture of shooting and climbing, and newcomers find something firm but fair once the patterns are learned. For a Super Nintendo collection, The Untouchables is both a 1994 Ocean release and a recognisable licence of its day, which makes it a sensible pick for shelves built around film adaptations or crime stories.
