Thunder Force III is TechnoSoft's 1990 shooter for the Sega Genesis, and the point where the series found its final shape. Picking up after the explosive conflict of Thunder Force II, it sends a single fighter craft against enemy strongholds spread across a handful of worlds, each built around its own hazard. TechnoSoft set aside the overhead stages of the previous game and committed fully to side scrolling, then filled the screen with backdrops that scroll in three dimensions to give a real sense of depth. Thunder Force III was a showpiece for the console, the kind of game people used to argue over in schoolyards.

You choose which world to tackle first, so the shape of the difficulty curve is partly yours to set. A wide array of sophisticated weaponry is collected as you go and cycled through at the press of a button, and you can change your ship's speed to suit a tight corridor or an open sky. Every stage closes with a menacing boss machine whose abilities take a few attempts to read and a few more to beat cleanly. It is a one player game, generous with its firepower and strict about where you stand.

Decades on, Thunder Force III is still the game people name first when they talk about Genesis shooters.
