Thunder Fox - for Genesis

Thunder Fox is Taito's 1991 action game for the Sega Genesis, adapted from the company's coin operated release. Terrorists are on the move, and two acrobatic heroes, Thunder and Fox, are sent to stop them in the air, at sea and on land. Taito built Thunder Fox around striking color graphics and constant movement: you are rarely standing still, and the setting changes often enough that no stretch feels like the one before. The choice between two uniquely skilled characters gives the game its hook, and the pace never lets up once you pick one.

Play is a mix of running, jumping and close quarters fighting. Thunder Fox leans on hard hitting hand to hand combat, so enemies are dealt with up close as often as at a distance, while special weapons found along the way give you an edge when the odds pile up. Quick reflexes matter, but so do clever maneuvers: knowing when to press ahead and when to let a crowd come to you. Air, sea and land all take their turn, and the single player campaign keeps its pace brisk from the first screen to the last.

Thunder Fox has a loyal following among players who like their action games direct and physical. It carries Taito's arcade instincts intact, with short stages, readable enemies and a difficulty that asks you to improve rather than grind. For collectors it is one of the more interesting Taito entries on the Genesis, less talked about than the big names but satisfying every time it goes into the slot. Anyone building a shelf of Genesis action games will find that Thunder Fox earns its space there.
