Thundercade - for NES

Thundercade is a shooter for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Micronics and published by American Sammy in 1989. The story is late eighties action cinema in miniature: terrorism has reached new heights, and AATOM, the Atomic Age Terrorist Organization of Miracali, has built its own nuclear power plant and threatens the world with atomic terror. The world powers answer by launching operation Thundercade, and you are the one sent in, riding a high performance combat motorcycle with cannons mounted on the sidecar and a precision bomber flying cover above you.

Play scrolls vertically. The road rolls up the screen, enemy vehicles and gun positions come down it, and you ride through firing with everything you have while the bomber gives support overhead. The sidecar cannons are the heart of the machine, and keeping your firepower up matters more than anything else as the waves grow heavier. Stages run long and build toward larger targets, and Thundercade is happy to throw a great deal of metal at you at once. The cartridge supports two players.

Thundercade has lasted because the idea is so direct. You, a motorcycle, a pair of cannons and an entire terrorist army: there is nothing to learn and everything to shoot, and the NES handles that kind of pressure well. The music and the cheerfully ridiculous premise are a large part of the charm, and the two player option makes it an easy one to put in front of a friend. For collectors, Thundercade is a solid American Sammy release from 1989 and one of the more distinctive shooters on the console, since very few of its rivals are played from the saddle.
