Timecop - for SNES

Timecop is an action platformer for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Cryo Interactive Entertainment, published by Victor Entertainment and released in 1995. It is an adaptation of the 1994 film, and the stakes are stated in one line: you win, the madman is history, you lose, he destroys it. You play Max Walker, a time enforcement officer, chasing Kleindast through the ages in what the game bills as the battle of the century. Arriving in 1995, Timecop sits among the later film adaptations on the Super Nintendo.

Strap on the time control bracelet and the manhunt takes you across three very different eras, each with its own trouble waiting: mobsters in 1920 Wall Street, soldiers in World War II Germany, street punks in 2117 Los Angeles. Stages mix movement and close quarters fighting, with Walker running, jumping and striking his way towards his target while the scenery and opposition shift around him. Timecop is a single player game, and it keeps the pacing of its source material: short, loud, forward driving sequences rather than sprawling levels, with time itself working against you as you close in on Kleindast.

Timecop holds a particular appeal for players who love nineties action cinema on cartridge. The time travel conceit gives it a changeable look that few console beat em ups of the period could match, and the premise is grasped in seconds by anyone who sits down with it. For collectors, Timecop is a 1995 release from a publisher not often seen on Super Nintendo shelves outside Japan, and it is a natural companion to other film licences of the mid nineties. If your collection tells the story of how Hollywood met the console, Timecop belongs in it.
