Torneko no Daibouken: Fushigi no Dungeon was released only in Japan in 1993, developed and published by Chunsoft for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and this cartridge plays an English fan translation. It takes Torneko, the merchant from Dragon Quest IV, and gives him a story of his own: having helped defeat the evil threatening the world, he settles in Endor, grows restless behind the counter and hears rumors of a Mysterious Dungeon worth exploring. What makes Torneko no Daibouken: Fushigi no Dungeon important is what it began, since this is the first of Chunsoft's Mystery Dungeon games.
The dungeon is seen from overhead and it is different every time you walk in. Torneko equips whatever weapons and shields he finds below, gathers scrolls, staffs and herbs whose effects you learn by using them, and meets enemies drawn from the Dragon Quest bestiary. Getting out alive is the whole game: return safely and you can sell what you carried back, putting the money into the quality of your shop and your living quarters. Special items can be left in the vault so they are waiting for the next trip, which turns every descent into a question of how much you are willing to risk in one go.
Players still love Torneko no Daibouken: Fushigi no Dungeon because its loop is honest and endlessly replayable, and because the Dragon Quest warmth takes some of the edge off a famously demanding style of game. It is a piece of history too, the cartridge the whole Mystery Dungeon line grew out of. For collectors, an English fan translation is a practical way to play a game that was never released outside Japan, and it sits well beside the Dragon Quest titles that gave Torneko his start.
