True Lies - for Genesis

True Lies arrived on the Sega Genesis in 1994, developed by Beam Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment, and it takes the biggest set pieces of the film and turns them into a lean action game. You play special agent Harry Tasker, a man who is not saving the world, except that he absolutely is: it falls to you to stop the Crimson Jihad and prevent a nuclear holocaust. True Lies promises all the action of the movie mega hit and none of the romance, and it backs that up with secret missions that never appeared on screen.

Play runs from an overhead view, with Harry moving freely through each area, shooting his way past enemies and working toward the objective that ends the mission. The stages take you through the kind of places the story demands, from built up interiors to open ground, and there are weapons to find and put to use along the way. True Lies is a single player game, so the whole operation rests on you, and it keeps the pressure high with enemies arriving from every direction and missions that expect you to learn a layout before you survive it.

Film tie ins from the 16 bit years have a mixed reputation, and True Lies is one that action fans still speak well of, largely because it commits to being a tense, fast shooter rather than a grab bag of unrelated mini games. Fans of the movie enjoy seeing Harry Tasker turned loose, and players who like their action demanding find plenty of reasons to come back. For collectors, True Lies is a strong example of mid nineties licensed design on the Genesis and a solid addition to any action shelf.
