Truxton - for Genesis

Truxton is a vertically scrolling shooter from ToaPlan, brought to the Sega Genesis in 1989 and published by Sega of America. The setup is pure arcade: the Gidans have blown up your planet's cargo barge and are on their way to Borogo with a swarm of flying fortresses, asteroids loaded with tanks, guns and explosives for an all points takeover. You are the one pilot alive with the guts to meet them, and Truxton puts you in the cockpit of the Super Fighter to do it. ToaPlan built its name on shooters like this one, and the pedigree shows on every screen.

Truxton is a single player game across five separate battles, and it asks for steady nerves more than clever tactics. Power Shots give the Super Fighter real punch, the Truxton Beam cuts through a speeding onslaught, and when an enemy force field leaves you nowhere to go, the devastating Rainbow Circe Shot is there to clear the way. Your firepower grows as you collect what the wreckage leaves behind, and the screen fills steadily with danger as the stages go on. Losing a life costs you that build up, which is the moment every shooter fan knows and dreads.

Shooter fans love Truxton for its honesty. It is loud, heavy and hard, with chunky explosions, a driving soundtrack and no interest in making things easy, and it rewards the patient work of learning a stage until it finally falls. As one of the earliest ToaPlan conversions on the Genesis, Truxton also marks the point where the console began attracting serious arcade shooters, which makes it a meaningful cartridge as well as a fun one. Any collection built around 16 bit shooters feels incomplete without Truxton in it.
