Tuff E Nuff is a fighting game developed and published by Jaleco, released on the Super Nintendo in 1993 and known in Japan as Dead Dance. It is set after the Great War of 2151, when warlords took up arms against each other and whole cities were reduced to rubble. Out of that dust rose Jade, the Fighting King, who rules the land with an iron fist from a secret room at the top of the great Tower. Everything about him is shrouded in mystery, and the warriors who went in to stop him never came back.

Four brave champions have travelled from distant lands to end that reign of terror, but only one can enter the Tower at a time, so they hold a series of matches among themselves first. That premise shapes Tuff E Nuff: you pick a champion, work through the contest, then climb the Tower, where more than six enemies with psychotic fighting skills wait before Jade himself. A two player mode is here as well, so the Colosseum argument can be settled with a friend on the sofa.

Tuff E Nuff keeps its fans because it has a mood of its own. The setting, the heavy sprites and the soundtrack give it a flavor the better known fighters of 1993 do not share, and the climb up the Tower gives the solo side a clear shape and a clear goal.
