Turok - Rage Wars - for N64

Turok: Rage Wars is a shooter for the Nintendo 64, developed by Acclaim Studios Austin and published by Acclaim Entertainment in 1999. It points the series somewhere new. Where earlier Turok games sent you alone through hostile wilderness, Turok: Rage Wars is built around combat between players. Since time began, Turok has maintained the balance between good and evil with the Light Burden, a vessel that holds the power of creation, and now fierce wars are fought for control of it. To prove yourself worthy, you relive the challenge of your ancestors and survive the Rage Wars.

The arenas are tight and the pace never lets up. Turok: Rage Wars carries eight savage game modes, among them brutal deathmatches, the squad fighting of Team Bloodlust, the chase of Frag Tag and cooperative mission based play. Up to four players can share one console in split screen, and there is a single player run of matches against computer opponents for the nights when the room is empty. The weapons are the heart of it: lethal, inventive and powerful out of all proportion, exactly as the series was known for.

Players still come back to Turok: Rage Wars because it commits completely to one idea. This is a Nintendo 64 shooter made for a living room with four controllers in it: quick to explain, loud, and happy to run until the small hours. For collectors it completes the Turok shelf on the console, sitting alongside the solo adventures as the entry that turned the series loose on your friends. A cartridge like this belongs next to the machine rather than in a drawer, ready whenever the room fills up.
