Two Crude Dudes - for Genesis

Two Crude Dudes is a side scrolling beat 'em up for the Sega Genesis, developed by Opera House and published by Data East in 1992, following the company's arcade brawler. After a nuclear explosion, New York needs rebuilding, and the work has barely started when the Big Valley gang arrives and takes full control for itself. The Government's answer is a pair of enormous heavies known as the Crude Dudes, and Two Crude Dudes puts you in their boots to clear the gang out of the ruins, street by street.

You travel through tough streets taking out Big Valley's people, destroying their vehicles and avoiding the force of their weaponry, with a boss waiting at the end of every level. The opposition runs from street muscle to werewolves, skeletons and hunchbacks, which tells you how seriously the game treats its ruined city. The signature move is brute strength: the Crude Dudes can lift enemies and scenery clean over their heads and throw them, which turns most of the screen into ammunition. Two Crude Dudes supports two players, and bringing a friend along is how most people remember playing it.

Two Crude Dudes has aged into a favorite for some of the same reasons it once seemed ridiculous: it is silly, enormously heavy handed and very satisfying, and throwing one enemy into another never stops being funny. The Streets of Rage comparison is fair, but the sheer size of the characters and the physical comedy of hurling things give Two Crude Dudes a character all its own. For collectors it is one of the most entertaining brawlers in the Genesis library, and one of the best cartridges to have ready when someone else picks up the second controller.
