Undead Line - for Genesis

Undead Line is an overhead arcade shooter for the Sega Genesis, developed by T&E Soft and published by PAL SOFT in 1991. It sets run and gun action against a backdrop of monsters and the undead, with the straightforward, pick up and play character of the games it takes after, Commando among them. You control a lone character who runs through scrolling stages firing projectiles at everything that moves. Undead Line is one of the lesser known shooters in the Genesis library, and it has a stubborn charm all its own.

Six levels are presented on a menu, and you can select and play them in whatever order you like, each one ending in a boss battle. Chests are scattered through the stages and open when you shoot them, releasing power ups. In the Genesis version you can keep firing at a chest to cycle through the available choices before you take one, which turns each find into a small decision. The power ups include armor and speed boosts along with several types of projectiles, so you can shape your character to suit the level ahead or the boss you know is waiting at the end of it.

Players still love Undead Line for its honesty. There is no filler: you choose a stage, you shoot your way through it, and a boss decides whether you were ready. Being able to take the levels in any order makes it easy to pick up for a short session and rewarding to learn properly. For collectors, Undead Line is one of those cartridges that makes a Genesis shelf feel complete, a 1991 shooter that rarely gets mentioned alongside the big names but holds its own the moment you start playing.
