Valis for the Sega Genesis was developed by Riot and published by Telenet Japan in 1991. It follows Yuko Ahso, an ordinary Japanese teenager whose life turns upside down when a monster attacks her in the street and a sword appears in her hands. After fighting off the creatures invading the city she is summoned to the parallel world of Vecanti, ruled by a cruel tyrant named Rogles, and must wield the legendary Valis sword to defeat him and restore the balance between worlds. Valis shares its story and its platform action with the first game in the series, but it is a different game, with its own locations, enemies, bosses and cutscenes.
Play is built on precise movement and timing. Yuko jumps very high and can attack in mid air, and getting past the enemies that fill the world means knowing when to jump, when to duck and when to swing. Power ups are scattered throughout, and many of them improve the sword itself: it acts as a melee weapon at first and can be built up into something closer to a medium range weapon that fires shots, in several directions once you have the right upgrades. Bosses have their own attack patterns and each needs a different strategy, so the game keeps asking you to adjust rather than simply push forward.
Valis is remembered for its tone and its cutscenes, a schoolgirl heroine in a fantasy world, told with more drama than most platformers of the era attempted. Players come back for the feel of the sword once it is fully grown and for stages that stay fair even when they are tough. For collectors, Valis is an appealing way into a series with a devoted following, and it sits comfortably beside the other Telenet releases on a Genesis shelf.
