Valis III - for Genesis

Valis III, developed by Renovation Game and published by Telenet Japan in 1991, continues the story of Yuko Ahso on the Sega Genesis. Yuko is a student in the Human World, called to fulfil her destiny in Dreamland and defend it from the Dark King Glames, who seeks new territory to replace his disappearing Dark Kingdom. His Sword of Lethus is the magical counterpart to Yuko's Sword of Valis, and whoever holds the pair commands enormous destructive power. What sets Valis III apart in the series is that Yuko does not have to fight alone.

Yuko's twin sister Valna is the new Queen of Dreamland and her powerful magic is needed in the battle, but she is trapped in a crystal block. Freeing her takes the help of Cham, who was born of the Dark Kingdom, and Yuko must defeat the evil bosses Garther and Kolilanba before Cham and Valna can lend their strength. All three can slide, high jump and call on special attacks using fire, ice and thunder, and attack items picked up along the way increase their power. Choosing between them to suit a stage or a boss is the heart of Valis III, and with time running out on Dreamland there is real pressure behind every decision.

Players still love Valis III for its scale and its presentation. The story is told with conviction, and three playable characters give the action more variety than most platformers of 1991 offered. It is a single player adventure that rewards learning each character's strengths instead of leaning on one. For collectors, Valis III is often the entry people want most from the series on the Genesis, and it makes a handsome companion to Valis on the same shelf.
