Vectorman - for Genesis

Vectorman was developed by BlueSky Software and published by Sega of America in 1995, late in the life of the Sega Genesis and clearly built to show what the hardware could still do. In 2049 humanity leaves Earth to colonise other planets, leaving mechanical orbots behind to clean up the litter and pollution it created. Raster, a high level orbot watching the planet through a worldwide computer network, is accidentally attached to a working nuclear missile, goes insane, renames himself Warhead and declares himself ruler of Earth, ready to execute any human who returns. Vectorman, a humble robot who was away discharging toxic sludge into the sun, lands home to chaos and sets out to stop him.

Vectorman is an action platformer built on running, jumping and shooting, and its hero is assembled from spheres that give him a distinctive look and fluid animation. He fires in a wide range of directions, collects upgrades for his shot, and at points transforms into other shapes entirely to get through a stage. The levels keep changing character, from surface runs to underwater sections, and the size of the bosses is part of the appeal. It is a single player game that asks for reflexes and a little curiosity, since stages hide routes and items worth hunting for.

Vectorman is still one of the best looking games on the Genesis, and players return to it for exactly that: the animation, the lighting and the soundtrack all still land. It is also simply a good platformer, quick and generous, with a hero who feels powerful from the first screen. For collectors, Vectorman is one of the console's late highlights and a cornerstone of any Genesis platformer collection, standing alongside Sega's best known mascots rather than behind them.
