Vegas Stakes - for SNES

Vegas Stakes is a casino game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Imagineer in 1993. It takes the simple idea of a night on the floor and dresses it up properly: you check into a hotel, meet friends in the lobby, and head out to gamble with a stake, a goal and a companion at your side. Coming from HAL, the studio behind Kirby, Vegas Stakes is about as warm and approachable as a game about losing money can be, and it never forgets that the fun lies in the swing between winning big and busting.

Five games fill the floor: Blackjack, Slots, Roulette, Craps and Seven Card Stud poker. The aim is to parlay a modest stake into a serious bankroll and chase a target of ten million dollars, which takes nerve as much as luck. Your companion explains the rules, quotes the odds and offers advice, so beginners can learn each game properly instead of guessing. You can play with a standard Super NES controller or with the Super NES Mouse, battery backup saves your bank information between sessions, and up to four people can play, which makes this a good one to bring out with three friends in the room.

Vegas Stakes is still loved because it is pure, low stress fun. No real money is at stake, the presentation is bright and friendly, and the long climb toward ten million gives a session a shape most casino games lack. It is also one of the easiest games to hand to someone who does not usually play video games at all. For collectors it is an interesting HAL Laboratory credit, a neat showcase for Super NES Mouse support, and one of the better casino games of its era. Few Super Nintendo libraries feel complete without something as cheerfully odd as Vegas Stakes.
