Vigilante 8 - for N64

Vigilante 8 is a vehicular combat game for the Nintendo 64, developed by Luxoflux and published by Activision in 1999. The setting is the western United States in 1976, in the middle of a worldwide oil shortage. An outfit called OMAR, the Oil Monopoly Alliance Regime, hires the best terrorist a hundred million dollars can buy, Sid Burn, and sends him and five hired Coyotes to wreck the refineries of the southwest. Six civilians led by a truck driver named Convoy call themselves the Vigilantes and drive out to stop them.

Vigilante 8 gives you eight characters, each with their own agenda, and vehicles that run from classic 1970s muscle cars to a school bus, every one of them stacked with weapons. Arenas are open enough that driving skill matters as much as aim, and the Nintendo 64 version of Vigilante 8 lets four players go at it head to head. There is plenty held back for people who keep playing: hidden levels, three of them on this version, plus five hidden characters and cars.

What has kept Vigilante 8 alive is tone. The soundtrack, the dusty desert palette and the deadpan cast give it a personality that outlasted most of the car combat games it shared shelves with, and the four player mode is still a fine reason to dig out every controller you own. For collectors, Vigilante 8 is the Nintendo 64 doorway into a genre that burned bright and briefly, and a cartridge that gets an evening started in about thirty seconds.
