Virtua Fighter 2 - for Genesis

Virtua Fighter 2 arrived on the Sega Genesis in 1996, developed by Data East and published by Sega of America, bringing the most talked about fighting game of the arcades home to 16 bit hardware. Instead of chasing polygons, this version rebuilds the arcade experience with hand drawn sprites, vibrant colors and detailed stage backgrounds that show what the Genesis could still do late in its life. All eight fighters from the arcade roster are here, and that mix of a famous 3D name reworked as a 2D fighter is what makes Virtua Fighter 2 stand out.

Matches are one on one across rounds, with a single player run through the roster and a two player mode for matches against a friend on the couch. Each of the eight characters keeps a recognizable style, from grapplers who punish a careless approach to quick strikers who crowd you at close range, and the Genesis pad maps cleanly onto punch, kick and guard. Throws, ring positioning and careful spacing all matter, so Virtua Fighter 2 rewards players who learn the distance game rather than mashing buttons.

Players keep coming back to Virtua Fighter 2 because it is a genuine oddity with real charm: a conversion that had no business existing on a 16 bit console, made with obvious care for the characters and the look of the arcade game. It landed very late in the Genesis story, which is part of why it is such a satisfying find for collectors. If you are building a Genesis fighting shelf, or a collection from the console's final years, Virtua Fighter 2 belongs on it.
