Virtual Bart puts Springfield's most famous troublemaker inside a virtual reality machine, built by Martin Prince for the elementary school science fair. Released in 1994 by Acclaim Entertainment and developed by Sculptured Software, it is a Simpsons platformer that throws away a single connected world in favor of six very different virtual programs. Bart is strapped in and has to play his way through each one before the programs crash. What makes Virtual Bart stand out is how little it repeats itself: every stage changes what Bart is and how he moves.
Three stages are side scrolling platform levels in which Bart takes the role of a pig, a dinosaur and a baby. The other three switch to a rear view: tossing tomatoes and eggs, sliding down a water slide, and riding a motorcycle through a post apocalyptic Springfield. Which stage comes next is decided by a spin of the wheel of misfortune, so no two runs play out in quite the same order. It is a single player game with cartoon styled sprites and a sense of humor that matches the show.
Virtual Bart is remembered for its variety and for the challenge it puts in front of you, and plenty of players who grew up with it still trade stories about the stages that gave them trouble. The nineties Simpsons games are a collecting niche of their own, and Virtual Bart is one of the more ambitious of them, a cartridge that tries six ideas rather than stretching one. For Genesis collectors, fans of licensed platformers, or anyone who wants a slice of nineties Simpsons history that still plays, Virtual Bart earns its shelf space.
