Vixen 357 - for Genesis

Vixen 357 is an anime styled tactical role playing game with mecha combat, developed by NCS and published by Masaya for the Sega Genesis in 1992. It is set in 2384 AD, after a great interstellar war that Earth won thanks to a secretly developed robot weapon called the Serd. Once that secret was out, nations built Serds of their own, then went further and developed the far more destructive Vector, and the wars that followed shape the world of the game. You command Takuya Murasawa and his comrades in a special military force called Slash, whose base comes under attack by unidentified Vectors.

Play unfolds on battle maps, moving your mechas into position and attacking enemies at long range or in melee. When two machines clash the view cuts to an animated battle sequence, which gives the fights far more weight than icons trading numbers. Pilots can be switched between mechas and machines can be repaired during a battle, so managing your force matters as much as choosing targets. Pilots earn experience and level up over the campaign, and new robots and weapons gradually become available as the story goes on.

Vixen 357 is loved by strategy fans for its mix of serious mecha fiction and clean tactical design, the kind of game that rewards patience and planning rather than quick reflexes. The Genesis library is not deep in tactical role playing games, which makes this one a standout for anyone who enjoys the genre on 16 bit hardware. For collectors who look past the famous platformers to the strategy corner of the shelf, Vixen 357 is one of the console's most interesting entries.
