War Gods - for N64

War Gods is a fighting game for the Nintendo 64, published by Midway Home Entertainment in 1997, with the console version developed by Eurocom Entertainment Software. It came out of Midway's arcade cabinets at the height of that studio's appetite for spectacle, and War Gods carries the attitude with it: ten fighters, each built around a different ancient civilisation, trading blows in fully three dimensional arenas. Warriors, gods and monsters from across human history, thrown into the same tournament.

Matches are one versus one. The fighter under your control can perform a long list of moves and string them together into combos, and every character on the roster has a finishing move that removes an opponent in some gruesome manner once the round is won. The arenas are spaces you move through rather than flat lanes, so positioning counts alongside timing. Two players can settle it on one console, and with ten fighters to pick from there is always another matchup to try.

War Gods has held on to a devoted following, partly for that roster of god like brawlers and partly because very little else looks or sounds quite like it. It is a clear snapshot of the late 1990s, when every fighting series was reaching for the third dimension and each one solved the problem differently. Collectors hunt War Gods as a Midway oddity on the Nintendo 64, a cartridge with far more personality than its reputation suggests, and anyone who grew up with it will still know the finishing moves by heart.
