Warsong - for Genesis

Warsong opens with the Dalsis Empire laying siege to the Castle of Baltia, hunting the legendary sword that gives the game its name. King Alfador sends his only son, Prince Garett, out into the countryside before the castle falls, and the story follows the prince as he rallies allies across the kingdom and builds an army to take the sword back. Developed by Masaya Games and published by NCS in 1991, Warsong became a landmark strategy role playing game on the Sega Genesis and the start of the series known in Japan as Langrisser.

You command an army rather than a small party. Each mission begins with choosing your commanders and the troops who follow them, then leading those squads across the battlefield against the forces of the Empire. Commanders fight alongside their units and grow stronger as the campaign goes on, so keeping them alive and well supported is the heart of the strategy. Terrain, unit types and the order in which you commit your forces all shape how a battle turns, and the campaigns build steadily toward a final showdown with the power behind the invasion.

Warsong is still spoken of as one of the best strategy games on the Genesis, and for many players in the West it was a first taste of the squad based tactics the genre built on for years afterward. It pairs a classic fantasy story with battles that stay readable and fair, which is a large part of why it holds up so well today. Any Genesis collection with a strategy or role playing streak feels incomplete without Warsong, and it repays the long hours a good campaign asks for.
