WCW Backstage Assault is a professional wrestling game for the Nintendo 64, developed by Kodiak Interactive Software Studios and published by Electronic Arts in 2000. It arrived with an unusual idea at its center: the ring is gone. Every match in WCW Backstage Assault takes place in the real world spaces around a wrestling show, from the locker room to the garage to the loading dock. It also carries a place in history, as it was the last World Championship Wrestling game released before WCW was purchased by the World Wrestling Federation.

Over 50 WCW wrestlers fill the roster, and they bring their traditional wrestling moves with them. What changes is the furniture around them. Weapons are part of the plan rather than an interruption, so trash cans and lengths of lumber turn up alongside the usual slams and submissions. Working through the game's various modes unlocks additional wrestlers, areas and weapons, which gives WCW Backstage Assault a steady sense of progress. Bobby Heenan and Tony Schiavone handle the commentary with over 8,000 lines of dialogue, and two players can settle things between themselves.

Players still come back to WCW Backstage Assault because nothing else on the Nintendo 64 looks or feels quite like it. Stripping away the ring gives the fights a scrappy, cluttered character, and the backstage settings are exactly what wrestling fans picture when a brawl spills out of the arena. For collectors, it is a bookend. WCW Backstage Assault closes out the WCW era on Nintendo's console, and a shelf of Nintendo 64 wrestling titles feels incomplete without the strange one that left the ring behind.
