WCW Nitro - for N64

WCW Nitro is a wrestling game for the Nintendo 64, developed by Inland Productions and published by THQ in 1999. It takes its name and its look from WCW Monday Nitro, the television show that carried World Championship Wrestling through its hottest years, and it leans hard on speed. WCW Nitro was sold as the fastest wrestling game to hit the Nintendo 64, and that quickness is what separates it from the heavier, more simulation minded wrestling titles on the console. Over 60 WCW and NWO Superstars are here, ready to go for the gold.

Matches run as Singles, Tag Team or Battle Royale, and the action is not confined to the ring: fights spill out and keep going on the floor. Each wrestler carries dozens of moves, including trademark maneuvers, taunts and finishers. Arenas are drawn from WCW's biggest events, among them WCW Monday Nitro, Starrcade and Halloween Havoc, with plenty of hidden arenas to turn up along the way. There are secret characters who run in on a match, the Nitro theme music is in place, and four players can share the card at once.

WCW Nitro still finds an audience because it plays fast and asks very little of you. Pick a Superstar, learn a finisher, and you are in business, which makes it an easy one to put in front of someone who has never played a wrestling game before. The roster is the other draw, since more than 60 names from the WCW and NWO years is a lot of history on one cartridge. For collectors, WCW Nitro fills out the THQ side of the Nintendo 64 wrestling story and sits comfortably beside the AKI releases it shared the shelf with.
