WCW vs. nWo - World Tour - for N64

WCW vs. nWo: World Tour is a wrestling game for the Nintendo 64, developed by AKI and published by THQ in 1997. It is the game that set the template for Nintendo 64 wrestling. Rather than mapping moves to single buttons, WCW vs. nWo: World Tour built its matches around a grappling system where timing and position decide what happens, and that approach shaped everything AKI made afterwards. The roster covers over 40 wrestlers in all, with more than 20 WCW and NWO superstars among them, including Hollywood Hogan, Sting, The Giant, Lex Luger, Ric Flair and The Outsiders.

Each wrestler can perform 30 to 40 moves, his own signature moves included, so learning one character properly is its own reward. Five different gameplay modes give a solo player plenty to chew on, and tag team matches open things up further. Simultaneous four player action is the headline, and WCW vs. nWo: World Tour handles a crowded ring better than most games of its era, with momentum swinging as wrestlers wear down and strikes begin to land differently. The result is a match that builds rather than one that simply ends.

Players still love WCW vs. nWo: World Tour because the fundamentals it introduced have aged beautifully. Matches have rhythm and reversals, and a four player session can run for hours without anyone wanting to stop. It is the starting point for a much loved line of wrestling games, which makes it a natural first pick for anyone building a Nintendo 64 collection around the genre. WCW vs. nWo: World Tour is where the nWo era and Nintendo's console met, and it remains one of the most playable wrestling cartridges on the system.
